ADC Lawmakers Demand INEC Chairman’s Removal Over Alleged Bias

Lawmakers from the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in the House of Representatives have called for the removal and prosecution of Joash Amupitan, Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), over allegations of partiality.

The caucus, speaking after its inaugural meeting in Abuja, warned that Amupitan’s continued stay in office could undermine the credibility of the 2027 general elections.

Addressing journalists, the lawmakers said they had reviewed recent political developments and were concerned about what they described as inconsistencies and actions that suggest bias on the part of the electoral umpire.

They specifically questioned the chairman’s neutrality, citing allegations linking him to a controversial social media account on X, which reportedly contained posts supportive of the ruling party and claims about religious persecution.

Although INEC has denied any connection between the chairman and the account, ADC lawmakers insisted that independent investigations and digital forensic analysis pointed to a link, including claims that the account was tied to a phone number registered in his name.

Based on these allegations, the caucus called for his immediate removal and prosecution, warning that failure to act could erode public confidence in the electoral process.

The lawmakers also accused INEC under his leadership of taking steps that could potentially sideline the ADC from participating fully in future elections, raising broader concerns about fairness and inclusivity in Nigeria’s democratic system.
