ADC Names Amaechi As Atiku’s Running Mate For 2027 Presidential Election

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has selected former Rivers State Governor and ex-Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, as the running mate to its presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, ahead of the 2027 general election.

The party announced the decision on Monday, saying Amaechi emerged after a series of consultations involving party leaders, coalition partners, youth and women groups, and representatives from across the country’s six geopolitical zones.

National Publicity Secretary of the ADC, Bolaji Abdullahi, said Amaechi’s nomination followed the party’s presidential primary, where he finished as runner-up.

According to Abdullahi, Amaechi’s performance during the contest underscored his national appeal and reinforced his credentials as one of the country’s most experienced political leaders.

He described the Atiku-Amaechi ticket as a strategic combination aimed at addressing Nigeria’s economic, security and governance challenges.

“The proposed partnership between His Excellency Atiku Abubakar and Rt. Hon. Rotimi Amaechi represents more than a political alliance; it is the coming together of two tested statesmen with the experience, national reach and leadership capacity required to rescue Nigeria from its current challenges and reposition the country for a new era of prosperity, security and inclusive development,” Abdullahi said.

The party spokesman highlighted Amaechi’s extensive public service career, which includes serving as Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, two-term governor of Rivers State and Minister of Transportation.

He noted that the former minister’s experience in both the legislative and executive arms of government would strengthen the party’s leadership team and governance agenda.

Abdullahi also pointed to Amaechi’s influence in the South-South region and across Southern Nigeria, describing him as a reform-minded administrator whose political reach could enhance the party’s electoral prospects.

According to him, the ticket brings together expertise in governance, public administration, economic management and nation-building.

“Together, Atiku Abubakar and Rotimi Amaechi embody a truly national ticket, one that bridges regions, generations and political traditions,” he added.

The ADC said it believes the partnership will energise its coalition and offer Nigerians a viable alternative in the 2027 presidential race.

The party further called on its members, coalition partners, civil society organisations, youth groups and women associations to rally behind the ticket as preparations for the election gather momentum.

It reiterated its commitment to addressing key national issues, including insecurity, economic hardship, unemployment and national cohesion.
