Adeleke Alleges EFCC Plan To Freeze Osun Accounts Before Governorship Election

Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, has alleged that the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) is planning to freeze the state government’s bank accounts ahead of the August 15 governorship election.

The allegation was made through the Commissioner for Information and Public Enlightenment, Kolapo Alimi, who said the governor disclosed the alleged plot on Tuesday during a meeting at the Government House in Osogbo.

According to Alimi, the EFCC also plans to freeze the personal accounts of some top officials in the Adeleke administration.

Adeleke described the alleged move as illegal, insisting the anti-graft agency has no legal authority to freeze the accounts of a state government.

He warned that such an action would disrupt governance and cripple government operations just days before the governorship election.

“The governor affirmed that there is no legal basis or justification for any move to freeze the state government accounts, declaring that the anti-graft agency has no legal powers to freeze the account of a state government,” the statement said.

Adeleke further alleged that the planned action was politically motivated.

“The plot to freeze the state government accounts is meant to paralyse government activities ahead of the governorship election,” he said, describing the alleged plan as “the height of lawlessness” while demanding an explanation for any proposed action.

The EFCC has yet to respond officially to the allegation. When contacted, the commission’s spokesperson, Dele Oyewale, said he would respond later but had not done so at the time this report was filed.

The allegation comes amid heightened political tension in Osun State ahead of the August 15 governorship election, where Adeleke is seeking a second term on the platform of the Accord Party, while the All Progressives Congress (APC) is aiming to regain control of the state.

The governor had earlier appealed to President Bola Tinubu to intervene in the growing political violence in the state, calling for a peaceful, free and fair election.
