Leaders of the All Progressives Congress have signalled plans to adopt President Bola Ahmed Tinubu as the party’s sole presidential candidate for the 2027 general elections, as preparations intensify ahead of its upcoming national convention.
The position was echoed in Abuja by key party figures, including former Cross River State Governor Ben Ayade, former Speaker Yakubu Dogara and ex-Katsina State Governor Aminu Masari during a sub-committee meeting held ahead of the convention scheduled for later in the week.
Speaking at the meeting, Ayade said the party was repositioning itself to build a people-focused agenda, while expressing confidence in Tinubu’s leadership and the direction of the administration.
Masari, who chairs the convention’s central coordination committee, also declared that the party was fully prepared for both the convention and the 2027 elections.
Dogara, on his part, described Tinubu as a committed leader whose reforms, though challenging, would ultimately yield positive results for Nigerians. He added that the convention would serve as an opportunity for the party to present its achievements and vision ahead of the next election cycle.
Meanwhile, Ekiti State Governor Biodun Oyebanji assured party aspirants of a transparent and fair screening process, noting that the exercise would strictly follow party guidelines and the Electoral Act.
Kogi State Governor Usman Ododo also pledged that the committee would deliver on its mandate, while Senator Uche Ekwunife said the party was not only ready for the convention but confident of securing victory in 2027.
In a related development, the Progressive Governors’ Forum resolved to retain the existing zoning arrangement for party offices at the national level.
Chairman of the forum and Imo State Governor Hope Uzodimma said there was no need to alter the zoning formula since the current leadership structure remains in place.
The governors also reviewed national issues, including economic reforms and security challenges, reaffirming their support for Tinubu’s administration and its policy direction.
Overall, party leaders expressed confidence that ongoing reforms and internal cohesion would position the APC strongly ahead of the 2027 elections.
