Atiku Backs ADC Flagbearer, Promises Support For Any Candidate

Former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar has pledged to support whoever emerges as the presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Atiku made the declaration during an interview, stressing that party unity remains paramount regardless of who secures the ticket. He noted that the number of aspirants within the party is manageable and expressed confidence that the selection process would produce a credible candidate.

He also dismissed concerns raised by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) regarding the ADC, insisting that the party continues to gain traction nationwide despite recent disputes over its planned convention.

The former vice-president attributed the challenges facing the party to vested interests, suggesting that its rising popularity has made it a target of political pressure.

On party structure, Atiku emphasised the ADC’s commitment to youth and women inclusion, stating that many of its aspirants across various levels are young people. He added that he would have no hesitation in supporting a younger presidential candidate if one emerges.

He further expressed confidence that Nigerians are eager for change, citing economic hardship and growing insecurity as key concerns. According to him, the security crisis, especially in northern Nigeria, is largely driven by youth unemployment, poor access to education, and weak governance.

Atiku also criticised the government over what he described as widespread corruption and lack of accountability, arguing that these issues continue to worsen the country’s challenges.
