Atiku: My Goal Is a Better Nigeria, Not Presidency at All Costs

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has dismissed claims that he is desperate to contest the 2027 presidential election, stressing that his priority is building a better and more prosperous Nigeria.

Speaking at a ceremony in Lagos to welcome defectors to the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Atiku, represented by Prof. Ola Olateju of Achievers University, said his political mission goes beyond personal ambition.

“Atiku Abubakar’s plan is to build a better Nigeria. It is not about him becoming president at all costs, but about having a government that delivers for Nigerians,” Olateju said. “ADC is not just a party but a movement for a new beginning in Nigeria.”

Several prominent politicians defected to the ADC at the event, including PDP Board of Trustees member Dr. Abimbola Ogunkelu, former Lagos PDP Chairman Chief Muritala Ashorobi, and former PDP Youth Leader Tai Benedict.

ADC leaders, including National Secretary and former Interior Minister Rauf Aregbesola, Senator Kolawole Ogunwale, and Lagos ADC Chairman George Ashiru, received the new members.

Aregbesola, in his address, warned that Nigeria’s worsening insecurity, poverty, and high cost of living demanded urgent action. He said no government could survive long if it continued to neglect citizens’ welfare.

“The cost of living is unbearable, medical care is out of reach for many, and insecurity has left Nigerians living in fear,” he said. “We must act now to rescue this nation. ADC is the vehicle for that change.”

Atiku also emphasized that the ADC would produce its 2027 presidential candidate through a free and fair process. He pledged support for whoever emerges as the party’s flag bearer, insisting the collective goal is to deliver good governance and meet the aspirations of Nigerians.
