Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has expressed regret over his role in the formation of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in 2014, stating that Nigeria’s condition has deteriorated further under the party’s leadership.
Atiku, who was among key political figures that came together to form the APC and unseat former President Goodluck Jonathan, said the coalition was created out of concern that democracy was not functioning effectively at the time.
Reflecting on the political developments since then, he said the country now faces even greater challenges than it did in 2014, particularly in the areas of insecurity and economic stability.
According to him, the issues that prompted the opposition alliance more than a decade ago – including widespread insecurity and economic strain – have not only persisted but worsened.
He urged Nigerians to remain committed to strengthening democratic institutions, stressing the need to restore what he described as “true democracy” in the country.
Atiku’s remarks add to ongoing political debate over the direction of governance and the performance of successive administrations since the 2015 transition of power.
