Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has hinted at the possibility of contesting the 2027 presidential election, fueling fresh speculation about his political ambitions. In a brief exchange with journalists, captured in a post shared on his X account, Atiku said a formal declaration would be made in due time.
When asked directly if he would contest and when he might make it official, the 77-year-old replied with a smile, “We will let you know. We will give you formal announcement.” Responding to a question on what he would do if he failed to secure the party’s presidential ticket, he retorted confidently, “Have I ever failed to get the ticket? I’m confident.”
On the growing sentiment that younger candidates should emerge in Nigeria’s political space, Atiku maintained a democratic stance: “Let the youths contest now. It’s democracy,” he said.
Meanwhile, Dr. Emeka Kalu, President of the ECK Foundation, has expressed strong support for Atiku’s potential 2027 bid. He described the former Vice President as a detribalised leader with the experience needed to steer Nigeria through its economic and security crises.
In a statement, Kalu noted that backing Atiku could be a strategic political move, especially for the Igbo people, arguing that such support might strengthen their future chances, particularly for a candidate like Peter Obi, to gain national leadership. He added that Atiku’s leadership qualities and previous experience in office, especially during his time as Vice President, make him well-suited to lead Nigeria’s economic revitalisation through liberalisation policies, trade investment, and job creation.
