Brahim Diaz has issued a heartfelt apology to Moroccan fans after missing a decisive penalty that cost Morocco the Africa Cup of Nations final against Senegal.
The Real Madrid forward spoke out on Monday, a day after the painful defeat, taking full responsibility for the miss and vowing to repay the faith shown in him by supporters.
“My soul is aching,” Diaz wrote in an emotional Instagram post. “I dreamed of this title because of all the love you have given me – for every message and every show of support that made me feel I was not alone. I fought with everything I had, above all with my heart.”
The dramatic moment came deep into added time when Diaz won a penalty while contesting a corner. After a lengthy VAR review and protests from Senegalese players, he stepped up to take the spot kick, attempting a chipped finish to outwit goalkeeper Edouard Mendy. The effort failed, with Mendy calmly catching the ball, before Senegal went on to secure victory in extra time.
“I failed, and I take full responsibility for it. I apologise with all my heart,” Diaz said.
Reflecting on the disappointment, he admitted the setback would be difficult to overcome but insisted he would keep pushing forward.
“It will be hard to get back up because this wound does not heal easily, but I will try, not for myself, but for everyone who believed in me and suffered with me,” he added.
“I will keep moving forward until the day I can return all this love and become the pride of my Moroccan people.”
