The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has urged churches nationwide to heighten security and remain vigilant following the killing of more than 40 people in Plateau State.
The attack, which occurred in Angwan Rukuba in Jos North on Palm Sunday, has sparked widespread concern, with CAN describing the incident as tragic and deeply troubling.
In a statement, CAN President Daniel Okoh said the violence, which claimed the lives of men, women and children, reflects a disturbing trend of recurring attacks across the country. He lamented that a day meant for peace and reflection had been overshadowed by bloodshed.
Okoh called on Christians to remain prayerful but also take practical steps to ensure safety during Holy Week activities, including Good Friday services and Easter celebrations. He urged congregations to stay alert and collaborate with security agencies to prevent further attacks.
The CAN leader also raised alarm over reports that the assailants wore military-style uniforms, warning that such tactics could erode public trust and complicate security efforts. He called for a thorough investigation into the use of fake military attire by armed groups.
While acknowledging efforts by the Plateau State Government, CAN stressed the need for lasting solutions to insecurity, insisting that those responsible for the killings must be swiftly apprehended and prosecuted.
The association added that while faith remains essential, it must be matched with vigilance as the country navigates ongoing security challenges.
