Canada is in mourning after 10 people were killed in coordinated shootings at a secondary school and a nearby home in Tumbler Ridge, British Columbia.
Prime Minister Mark Carney addressed residents of the small community, located about 415 miles north of Vancouver, saying, “The nation mourns with you” as families grapple with the devastating loss.
Police said nine victims were killed at two separate but potentially connected scenes: Tumbler Ridge Secondary School and a nearby residential property. Six people were found dead inside the school, while a seventh victim died en route to hospital. Two additional victims were discovered at the home. At least 25 others were injured in the attacks.
Authorities believe the two scenes are linked, though they said investigations are ongoing and have not yet definitively confirmed the connection.
The suspect was found dead inside the school, according to police. While officers have identified the attacker, they have not released the name or gender. Earlier during the unfolding emergency, a shelter-in-place alert described the suspect as a female wearing a dress with brown hair.
Students and staff recounted harrowing moments as the violence unfolded. One student said classmates barricaded their classroom door with tables, while a teacher described hiding for hours as gunfire echoed through the building.
Emergency responders quickly secured the area and transported the wounded to nearby hospitals. Investigators continue to examine the circumstances surrounding what is being described as one of the deadliest attacks in the province’s recent history.
Officials have urged the public to rely on verified information as authorities work to determine a motive and reconstruct the sequence of events.
