Cole Palmer Shines as Chelsea Defeat PSG 3-0 to Win Club World Cup

Chelsea lifted the FIFA Club World Cup trophy for the second time in the club’s history with a commanding 3–0 victory over Paris Saint-Germain on Sunday at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey. The win was spearheaded by a sensational first-half performance from 23-year-old Cole Palmer, who scored a brace to help secure the title.

Palmer netted two goals within eight minutes, both strikes nearly identical and clinical, sending Chelsea fans into celebration under the sweltering New Jersey sun. The winger, known for his composed “cold” celebration, delivered once again—cementing his role as the club’s standout star this season.

João Pedro added a third for the Blues in the 43rd minute, marking his third goal of the tournament in only his second start since joining from Brighton. Chelsea’s clinical finishing and relentless pressure left PSG stunned, especially after dominating most of the competition, suffering only one prior defeat in the group stage to Botafogo.

The halftime show added to the spectacle, featuring surprise performances from Coldplay, J Balvin, Doja Cat, Tems, and Emmanuel Kelly—providing an unexpected interlude in an already dramatic final.

The second half saw fewer goals but no drop in Chelsea’s intensity. PSG’s frustrations boiled over late in the game, culminating in a red card for midfielder João Neves, who was sent off after pulling the hair of Chelsea’s Marc Cucurella.

At full-time, Chelsea players donned celebratory kits emblazoned with “World Champions 25” as they ran onto the pitch to celebrate. Fans cheered the London club’s second trophy of the season, following their UEFA Conference League triumph in May.

Cole Palmer was named Player of the Tournament, finishing his season with 18 goals and earning the prestigious Golden Ball award. Goalkeeper Robert Sánchez received the Golden Glove, while PSG’s Désiré Doué was awarded Best Young Player.

Reflecting on the victory, Palmer praised manager Enzo Maresca: “The gaffer put a great game plan out. He’s building something special, and I just had to repay him with some goals.”

Maresca, in his first season with Chelsea, hailed his team’s execution: “We won the game in the first ten minutes. The energy, the structure—it all came together today.”

PSG, fresh off a domestic double, had aimed to cap off the season with international silverware. But their Club World Cup campaign ended in disappointment and frustration. The 3–0 loss marked their heaviest defeat since a 4–1 Champions League loss to Newcastle in 2023.

Tensions boiled over after the final whistle, as João Pedro was involved in a heated exchange with PSG goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma and manager Luis Enrique. FIFA president Gianni Infantino and U.S. President Donald Trump were on hand to present the trophy amidst both cheers and scattered boos.

Enrique later downplayed the scuffle: “It was just the pressure of the match spilling over. Nothing more.”

Chelsea now turns its attention to the upcoming Premier League season, set to begin in under five weeks. PSG, meanwhile, will regroup ahead of their UEFA Super Cup clash with Tottenham Hotspur on August 13 in Udine, Italy.
