Veteran journalist and politician, Dele Momodu, has taken aim at the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) over what he described as a deliberate attempt to disrupt the unveiling of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) coalition—an emerging political platform aimed at uniting Nigeria’s opposition ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Momodu, who is actively involved in the coalition efforts, expressed outrage after the venue scheduled to host the coalition’s launch abruptly canceled the event. The programme, set to take place at the Wells Carlton Hotel and Apartments in Asokoro, Abuja, had been fully paid for, but organizers were informed just hours before the event that it could no longer be held due to an unspecified “internal compliance matter.”
The unexpected cancellation has sparked widespread speculation, with media personality Rita Ebiuwa alleging political interference. “APC is jittery. Threatening hotels not to allow their facilities to be used for today’s ADC adoption is ridiculous,” she wrote on social media.
Responding to the development, Momodu questioned the confidence of the ruling party, stating: “Why are they worried about a coalition they boasted is ‘dead on arrival’? Many of their supporters have privately told me they’re truly scandalised by the shenanigans of their overzealous members.”
The incident has drawn attention to what critics view as growing intolerance toward opposition activity under the current administration. It also underscores the tensions building ahead of the 2027 elections, as political realignments and coalition talks gather momentum.
