Elon Musk has become the first person in history to surpass a net worth of $1 trillion following the blockbuster initial public offering of SpaceX.
The milestone came after SpaceX completed a record-breaking $75 billion IPO on Thursday, significantly increasing the value of Musk’s holdings in the aerospace and satellite giant. The offering underscored strong investor confidence in the company, which has grown into one of the world’s most valuable technology and space enterprises.
Prior to the public listing, Forbes estimated Musk’s wealth at approximately $780 billion, already placing him far ahead of other members of the global rich list.
Commenting on the development, Forbes Wealth deputy editor Matt Durot noted the scale of Musk’s lead over other billionaires.
“The second richest person has been hovering around $300 billion, so about less than one-third of what Musk can potentially be worth tomorrow,” he said.
Reuters estimates, based on company filings, indicate that Musk’s stake in SpaceX alone is valued at about $866 billion. Combined with his holdings in Tesla and other ventures, his total wealth is expected to exceed $1.1 trillion as SpaceX shares begin trading.
Musk’s rise to global prominence began through Tesla and SpaceX, before he expanded his influence with the acquisition of X in 2022. The deal gave him control of one of the world’s largest social media platforms and further elevated his role in public debates on politics, technology and free speech.
His increasing political involvement has also drawn attention. Musk’s participation in the administration of Donald Trump through the Department of Government Efficiency generated controversy and coincided with weaker Tesla sales in some international markets during 2025.
Born in Pretoria, South Africa, Musk graduated from the University of Pennsylvania in 1997 before embarking on a business career that would transform multiple industries.
Analysts credit Tesla’s success with accelerating the global transition toward electric vehicles, while SpaceX has reshaped the commercial space industry through reusable rocket technology and satellite communications.
With the SpaceX listing now complete, Musk has further cemented his position as the world’s wealthiest individual, becoming the first person ever to cross the $1 trillion threshold in personal wealth.
