The Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Jabi, has dismissed claims that anti-snake venom was unavailable during the treatment of Abuja-based singer Ifunanya Lucy Nwagene, popularly known as Nanyah, who died following complications from a snake bite.

In a statement issued on X on February 1, 2026, the hospital expressed condolences to Nwagene’s family and addressed public concerns and social media allegations surrounding the circumstances of her death.

According to the statement, Nwagene was admitted to FMC Jabi on January 31, 2026, after suffering a snake bite that later resulted in severe neurotoxic complications. The hospital said its medical team acted promptly upon her arrival and provided immediate and appropriate care.

“The management team at Federal Medical Centre, Abuja acted swiftly and with utmost care,” the statement said, adding that treatment administered included resuscitation, intravenous fluids, intranasal oxygen, and the use of polyvalent snake anti-venom.

FMC Jabi explained that after a rapid clinical assessment, it became evident that the singer’s condition had deteriorated due to severe neurotoxic effects of the venom. While arrangements were being made to transfer her to the Intensive Care Unit for further management, she reportedly experienced a sudden decline in her condition.

Despite intensive efforts by medical personnel, including cardiopulmonary resuscitation and other life-saving interventions, Nwagene could not be revived, the hospital said.

The hospital firmly denied allegations of negligence or lack of essential medication, describing claims of anti-venom unavailability and inadequate response as “unfounded.”

“We stand by the quality of care and dedication demonstrated by our medical team,” the statement said, reaffirming the institution’s commitment to transparency, integrity, and quality healthcare delivery.

FMC Jabi also urged members of the public to seek information from verified and credible sources rather than relying on social media speculation.

The statement was signed by Dr. Bioku Muftau, Head of Clinical Services at the Federal Medical Centre, Jabi.
