The Federal Government of Nigeria has declared Thursday, March 19, and Friday, March 20, 2026, as public holidays to mark this year’s Eid-ul-Fitr celebration.
The Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, announced the decision, congratulating Muslims across the country on the successful completion of the Ramadan fast.
In a statement issued by the Permanent Secretary of the ministry, Magdalene Ajani, the minister urged Muslim faithful to sustain the values of love, generosity, peace, tolerance and sacrifice observed during the fasting period.
He encouraged Nigerians to carry these virtues beyond Ramadan as a way of strengthening national unity and peaceful coexistence.
Tunji-Ojo also called on citizens, regardless of religious affiliation, to use the festive period to pray for peace, unity and continued development in the country.
He further advised that celebrations should be conducted responsibly, while extending acts of kindness and support to the less privileged in line with the spirit of the season.
The government said the holiday declaration reflects its commitment to fostering harmony as Muslims nationwide prepare to celebrate one of the most significant festivals in the Islamic calendar.
