FIFA Announces Record $50m Prize for 2026 World Cup Champions

FIFA has announced that the winners of the 2026 World Cup will receive a record $50 million in prize money, as the football governing body increases the tournament’s total prize fund to $655 million.

The new figure marks a rise from the $42 million earned by Argentina after winning the 2022 World Cup in Qatar and the $38 million awarded to France following their victory in 2018. Despite the increase, the champions’ payout remains less than half of the prize money on offer at FIFA’s expanded Club World Cup earlier this year.

The 2026 tournament, which will be co-hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico, will feature 48 teams for the first time. FIFA said the overall prize pool represents a 50 per cent increase from the 2022 edition.

By comparison, the revamped 32-team Club World Cup carried a total prize fund of $1 billion, with the eventual winners earning up to $125 million. The competition, won by Chelsea, drew criticism from players and domestic leagues over fixture congestion and reportedly recorded low attendances for some matches.

FIFA has defended the disparity in prize money, noting that clubs incur far higher costs than national teams, particularly in player wages. The organisation also said revenues from the World Cup are reinvested into football development programmes worldwide.

FIFA president Gianni Infantino described the 2026 World Cup as “groundbreaking” in terms of its financial impact on the global game. The prize structure was approved at a meeting of FIFA’s council in Doha.

Under the distribution plan, the tournament runner-up will earn $33 million, while third and fourth placed teams will receive $29 million and $27 million respectively. All participating teams will be guaranteed at least $9 million, with each of the 48 nations also receiving an additional $1.5 million to cover preparation costs.

In total, FIFA said $727 million will be distributed to participating football federations, with the allocation of funds to players and officials left to the discretion of each national association.
