G7 Leaders Applaud Trump’s Iran Initiative, Raise Alarm Over China’s Grip On Critical Minerals

Leaders of the Group of Seven (G7) nations have voiced support for US President Donald Trump’s diplomatic efforts on Iran while turning their attention to growing concerns over China’s dominance of global critical mineral supplies.

At the ongoing summit, officials welcomed what they described as a significant diplomatic opening aimed at reducing tensions involving Iran, arguing that the development could contribute to greater stability across the Middle East.

While discussions initially centred on regional security, the focus soon shifted to economic and strategic issues, particularly China’s control of minerals vital to modern industries.

Several leaders warned that heavy reliance on Chinese supplies of critical minerals, including those used in electric vehicles, renewable energy technologies, electronics and defence systems, poses a long-term risk to the economic and national security interests of G7 countries.

Diplomatic sources said securing alternative sources of these minerals has emerged as a key priority for the bloc, with member states exploring measures to reduce supply chain vulnerabilities.

Among the proposals discussed were increased investments in domestic mining and processing capacity, support for new extraction projects, and stronger partnerships with resource-rich nations outside China’s sphere of influence.

Trade and economic officials at the summit also examined options for coordinated action to diversify supply chains and strengthen access to materials considered essential for future industrial and technological development.

The discussions reflect growing efforts by major Western economies to lessen dependence on a single supplier and build more resilient supply networks amid rising geopolitical competition.
