United States President Donald Trump was rushed to safety after gunshots triggered panic during the annual White House Correspondents’ Association dinner in Washington.
The incident occurred at the Washington Hilton Hotel, where Trump and other senior administration officials were abruptly evacuated by the Secret Service as security agents moved swiftly to contain the situation.
Authorities confirmed that a suspect had been taken into custody, while reports indicated the gunman was dead. The Secret Service later assured that the president was unharmed and moved to a secure location.
Despite the disruption, Trump signalled his willingness to return to the event, praising law enforcement for their rapid response. In a message shared online, he confirmed the suspect had been apprehended and commended officers for acting “quickly and bravely,” while suggesting the programme could continue depending on security assessments.
Eyewitness accounts described scenes of confusion as gunshots rang out. Journalists and guests ducked for cover while security personnel shielded top officials and escorted them out of the venue. Armed agents were later seen securing the area as police flooded the scene and helicopters circled overhead.
Several high-ranking officials were present at the dinner, including Vice President JD Vance, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, and Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth, all of whom were safely evacuated.
The event, hosted annually by the White House Correspondents’ Association, had just begun when the disturbance occurred. Organisers initially indicated the programme would resume after a brief pause, though the atmosphere remained tense following the incident.
The security breach is considered highly unusual for the high-profile gathering, which brings together political leaders, journalists, and public figures in what is typically a tightly controlled environment.
