Several security operatives, including soldiers and a police officer, have been killed in a deadly ambush by armed gunmen in Kebbi State, raising fresh concerns over insecurity in northern Nigeria.
The attack occurred on Tuesday night in Giro Masa community, Shanga Local Government Area, where security personnel were responding to intelligence from residents before they were attacked.
Eyewitnesses said the gunmen, believed to be operating in the area, had been traced to a construction company yard. Troops were deployed to secure the location but were ambushed en route in what was described as a sudden and intense assault. Casualties were reported among both security personnel and civilians.
In the aftermath, two military trucks were reportedly set on fire, while residents described the incident as chaotic and frightening. Military authorities have yet to release an official statement on the attack.
Kebbi State Governor Nasir Idris confirmed the incident during a visit to injured victims at the Federal Teaching Hospital in Birnin Kebbi.
Describing the attack as tragic, the governor condemned the violence and pledged support for those affected.
“These are the soldiers who protect the lives of our people, yet they found themselves in this situation. We will not relent in ensuring the safety of our citizens,” he said.
Idris assured that the state government would cover medical expenses for the injured and provide assistance to families of the deceased. He also visited the scene of the attack for an on-the-spot assessment.
The incident adds to a growing pattern of attacks on security forces across northern Nigeria. In recent months, similar clashes with armed groups have led to casualties among troops, underscoring persistent security challenges in the region.
