King Charles III has praised Nigeria for its longstanding tradition of religious coexistence, describing the country as a model of peaceful living among people of different faiths.
The British monarch made the remarks during a state dinner in London held in honour of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who is on an official visit to the United Kingdom.
Reflecting on an earlier engagement with Christian and Muslim leaders, King Charles said the gathering highlighted Nigeria’s example of unity despite religious diversity.
He noted that Nigerians have demonstrated that people of different faiths can live together in peace, harmony and shared purpose, while stressing the importance of sustaining that balance, particularly in the face of emerging challenges.
The monarch also described Nigeria as a major force on the global stage, citing its economic strength, cultural influence and growing diplomatic relevance.
“In a rapidly changing and interconnected world, such leadership comes with both responsibility and opportunity,” he said, while referencing the importance of global cooperation through platforms like the Commonwealth.
King Charles further highlighted the deepening economic ties between both countries, noting that Nigerian businesses are increasingly investing in the UK, while British institutions continue to expand their presence in Nigeria.
He pointed to growing collaborations in banking, education and technology, as well as increased travel and trade between the two nations.
According to him, Nigeria has become the UK’s largest export market in Africa, reflecting the strengthening economic relationship between both countries.
The monarch described the UK–Nigeria relationship as a partnership of equals built on mutual benefit, shared security interests and a common vision for prosperity.
He also acknowledged the complex history between the two nations, noting that while past experiences may carry painful memories, they should serve as lessons for building a more hopeful and cooperative future.
King Charles emphasised that both countries must continue to work together to strengthen their ties and promote growth, unity and shared progress.
