NFF Apologises To Tinubu, Nigerians Over Super Falcons’ WAFCON Setback

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has apologised to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Nigerians after the Super Falcons failed to secure a direct qualification ticket for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup at the ongoing Women’s Africa Cup of Nations.

In a statement, NFF President Ibrahim Musa Gusau said the federation, the Super Falcons and the wider Nigerian football community accepted responsibility for the disappointing result.

The NFF specifically apologised to President Tinubu, acknowledging his strong support for women’s football and the Super Falcons, including the recognition and rewards given to the team after their previous WAFCON success.

The federation also apologised to the National Assembly, National Sports Commission, sponsors, stakeholders and supporters of the team worldwide.

Despite the setback, the NFF said Nigeria’s World Cup hopes remain alive through the CAF play-off route. The federation said the Super Falcons would fight for one of the two available CAF play-off places and then seek qualification through the FIFA play-off tournament.

The NFF also promised to review the team’s preparation, technical planning, logistics and other aspects of its operations to identify areas that need improvement.

“We hear the disappointment of Nigerians, we share it and we accept our responsibility. But we are not giving up,” the federation said, urging Nigerians to continue supporting the Super Falcons as they pursue another route to the 2027 Women’s World Cup.
