American rapper Nicki Minaj has explained her decision to speak publicly about the alleged persecution of Christians in Nigeria, citing personal connections to the country and reports of attacks on worshippers.
Nicki Minaj made the remarks during a surprise appearance at AmericaFest on Sunday while responding to a question from Erika Kirk, widow of conservative activist Charlie Kirk.
When asked what prompted her to address the situation in Nigeria, the rapper said her long-standing affection for the country, coupled with reports of kidnappings and violence targeting churchgoers, motivated her to speak out.
“Nigeria is a place I’ve always loved,” Minaj said. “Someone very dear to me, my pastor, is Nigerian, and I have lots of Nigerian barbs.”
She added that accounts of worshippers being kidnapped and killed because of their faith should provoke global outrage.
“So hearing that people are being kidnapped while they’re in church, people are being killed and brutalised all because of their religion, that should spark outrage,” she said.
Minaj stressed that she would continue to speak up for Christians worldwide, insisting that religious persecution should not be ignored.
“We’re not backing down anymore. We are not going to be silenced by the bullies anymore. We will speak up for Christians wherever they are in this world,” she said.
The rapper also broadened her comments to address religious freedom globally, noting that many people take the ability to worship freely for granted.
“We take for granted that there are people in this world right now who cannot worship God as they please, where they please,” she said. “Every time we pray in fellowship, we should remember those who are hiding to pray and pray for them as well.”
