Leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, has been moved from the Department of State Services (DSS) detention facility in Abuja to a correctional centre in Sokoto, following his conviction and life sentence for terrorism.
Kanu was transferred on Friday, a day after Justice James Omotosho of the Federal High Court in Abuja found him guilty on a seven-count terrorism charge and sentenced him to life imprisonment. The court held that the prosecution had provided credible evidence that Kanu employed acts of terrorism in his agitation for the secession of parts of the South-East, South-South, Benue and Kogi States from Nigeria.
In his judgment, Justice Omotosho also affirmed the DSS’s authority to relocate the defendant to any correctional facility within the country.
Kanu’s legal consultant, Aloy Ejimakor, confirmed the transfer in a statement, saying: “Mazi Nnamdi Kanu has just been moved from DSS Abuja to the correctional facility in Sokoto; so far away from his lawyers, family, loved ones and well-wishers.”
A senior DSS source also confirmed the development when contacted, stating that the security agency had carried out the court-backed transfer.
