The Nigeria Union of Teachers has demanded the immediate rescue and release of teachers and schoolchildren kidnapped in Oyo State and other parts of the country, warning that it may embark on a nationwide strike if urgent action is not taken.
The union issued the warning during a solidarity rally held in the Federal Capital Territory, where members called for stronger measures to protect schools, teachers and students from growing security threats.
Addressing participants at the rally, NUT National President, Audu Amba, described attacks on schools and educators as a direct threat to the nation’s education system.
He urged both federal and state governments to prioritise the security of educational institutions, stressing that teachers and pupils should not have to operate under fear of abduction or violence.
“Educational institutions must be safe for teachers and learners,” Amba said, noting that persistent insecurity in several parts of the country continues to disrupt teaching and learning activities.
The NUT president maintained that the safety and welfare of teachers and students should remain a top priority for government authorities, warning that failure to secure the release of those in captivity could trigger further action by the union.
Amba also reaffirmed the union’s decision directing public primary and secondary school teachers in Oyo State to withdraw their services following the abduction of their colleagues and pupils.
The union said it would continue to engage relevant authorities while monitoring efforts to secure the victims’ release, insisting that swift action is needed to restore confidence in the safety of schools across the country.
