Key opposition figures, including Peter Obi, Seyi Makinde and Seriake Dickson, met with Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso in Kano in what observers see as an early move toward building a political coalition ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The leaders paid a Sallah visit to Kwankwaso, a prominent figure in the Kwankwasiyya movement, at his residence on Sunday, drawing a large gathering of supporters and political allies.
Discussions during the visit reportedly focused on strengthening opposition ties and exploring possible strategies for the next election cycle.
Addressing supporters, Obi emphasised the importance of unity among opposition parties, expressing confidence in their chances in 2027.
He also highlighted plans to revitalise Kano’s economy, particularly its industrial sector, mentioning efforts to restore activity in areas such as Bompai and Sharada, as well as revive institutions like the former Bank of the North.
“We want to rebuild Kano and restore its economic strength,” Obi said.
Despite the political undertones, Obi maintained that the visit was primarily to celebrate the Sallah festival and show respect to Kwankwaso.
Meanwhile, Abba Sadauki Gwale, chairman of the Kwankwaso-Obi Support Group, openly called for a formal alliance between the two leaders, arguing that such a partnership could reshape Nigeria’s political landscape and challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress.
He added that combining Obi’s support base in the South with Kwankwaso’s influence in the North could significantly boost the opposition’s chances in the 2027 elections.
