Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi has criticised the All Progressives Congress (APC)-led federal government following the United States’ designation of Nigeria as a “Country of Particular Concern” (CPC) over alleged human rights and religious freedom violations.
In a statement posted on X (formerly Twitter) on Monday, Obi described the development as “deeply troubling,” saying it reflects the government’s failure to tackle insecurity and protect citizens’ rights.
“The recent classification of Nigeria by the US as a Country of Particular Concern should give every well-meaning Nigerian serious concern,” he said. “Our nation is facing an unprecedented level of insecurity, with widespread killings and destruction of property.”
Citing figures from Amnesty International, the former Anambra State governor noted that more than 10,000 Nigerians have been killed since May 2023. “The unwarranted and unprovoked killing of Nigerians is most condemnable,” he added. “All efforts must be made to bring it to a stop.”
While acknowledging that insecurity predates the Tinubu administration, Obi said the situation has worsened due to what he called “incompetence, mismanagement, and lack of patriotic leadership” under the APC government.
“It is equally important to state that the terrible situation is significantly avoidable with competent leadership and governance,” he said. “What is most unfortunate is the absence of competence, commitment, prudent use of resources, and patriotism on the part of the APC-led government to effectively govern and unite Nigeria.”
Obi urged restraint in Nigeria’s response to the U.S. designation, calling instead for diplomatic engagement between both countries.
“As democracies, Nigeria and the U.S. have long been strategic partners committed to regional peace and security. That relationship should not falter,” he stated. “The present situation calls for constructive diplomatic and other plausible engagements aimed at addressing the prevailing security concerns. Both nations must work together expeditiously toward that purpose.”
