Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has expressed outrage over the recent surge in violence across Nigeria, condemning the government’s continued failure to address insecurity.
In a statement shared via his official 𝕏 handle on Saturday, Obi mourned the victims of a bomb explosion in Kano that reportedly killed at least five people and injured several others. He also referenced other violent incidents, including the killing of 12 wedding guests in Plateau State and an attack in Kebbi that left 30 people dead.
Obi said the frequency of such tragedies has dangerously normalized the loss of human lives in the country, noting that many incidents no longer make major headlines.
“A glance at the news in a day in Nigeria reveals the grim reality facing our nation. One begins to wonder if there is a serious government in place,” he wrote.
He listed several other attacks that occurred within the same time frame, including:
Obi stressed that Nigeria is not officially at war, yet citizens are dying daily from unchecked violence.
He also criticized those who accuse concerned Nigerians of “demarketing” the country when they raise these issues. “Is it not the endless bloodshed and rampant corruption that truly demarkets Nigeria?” he asked. “The world is watching. These atrocities and the lack of accountability are what damage Nigeria’s reputation.”
Obi further condemned reports of President Bola Tinubu planning a holiday in St. Lucia amid national grief and rising insecurity. “While Nigerians mourn and suffer, a vacation should not be the priority. Leadership demands presence and action, not retreat.”
He called on the president to visit affected states, engage with victims, and lead efforts to end the killings.
“Nigerians deserve security, dignity, and leadership that acts. A new Nigeria is possible — but only if we take decisive steps now.”
