Former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi on Saturday formally registered as a member of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) during the party’s membership drive in Anambra State.

Obi joined other prominent political figures, including Victor Umeh, who represents Anambra Central in the Senate, and former senator and presidential aide Ben Obi, in the registration exercise held in Awka.

While Obi registered at Agulu Ward 2 in Anaocha Local Government Area, Umeh completed his registration at Aguluzigbo Ward 1 within the same council area. Ben Obi registered at Agulu Awka in Awka South Local Government Area.

The event marked the official launch of the ADC membership registration campaign in the state, with party leaders encouraging supporters to return to their wards to enrol and recruit new members.

During the exercise, Obi criticised provisions of the Electoral Act 2026, alleging that aspects of the new law could be used to manipulate the outcome of the 2027 general elections. He said the party would challenge the legislation in court.

According to him, some of the amendments to the electoral framework appear designed to give undue influence over how political parties conduct their internal processes.

Obi also faulted the role of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), arguing that the commission should focus on conducting elections rather than interfering in how parties select their candidates.

He further accused the current leadership of concentrating on electoral control instead of addressing pressing governance challenges such as electricity supply and economic difficulties.

Looking ahead to the 2027 elections, Obi said political leaders in the South-east were working together and engaging stakeholders across the country to build a stronger opposition platform.

He urged Nigerians to join the ADC in large numbers, saying the next general election would present an opportunity to challenge what he described as poor leadership.

Speaking at the event, Ben Obi said the party’s objective was to strengthen unity within its ranks and position itself strongly ahead of future elections. He added that discussions were already ongoing with political stakeholders nationwide to expand the party’s support base.

Also addressing participants, Chairman of the Registration Committee, Benchuks Nwosu, said each of the 326 wards in Anambra State would receive 150 membership cards and a registration register for the first phase of the exercise.
