Sani Abacha’s Son Emerges PDP Governorship Candidate In Kano

Muhammad Sani Abacha, son of former military Head of State General Sani Abacha, has emerged as the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate for the 2027 Kano State governorship election.

Abacha was chosen after the party’s previous candidate, Muhammad Bello Dalha, withdrew from the race. The development followed an expanded state executive committee meeting in Kano on Wednesday, where the party conducted a replacement primary to affirm a new candidate.

PDP state chairman, Bello Gambo Bichi, said the process complied with the party’s constitution and relevant electoral laws.

“The law says that as a result of withdrawal, a replacement primary must be held. That is what brought us here today. We have affirmed Muhammad Sani Abacha as the gubernatorial candidate of our great party in Kano State,” Bichi said.

The replacement primary was overseen by an electoral panel led by Abba Abdullahi, who declared Abacha the winner and said the process followed the party’s guidelines and electoral regulations.

As part of the party’s reconciliation efforts, the PDP also allocated the deputy governorship slot to the group led by Kabiru Tanimu Turaki. Yusuf Ado Kibiya, a former factional chairman and former commissioner for Land and Agriculture, was subsequently named Abacha’s running mate.

Bichi said the changes followed consultations among different factions within the party and also affected some National Assembly and State Assembly candidates.

He added that representatives of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) were present and witnessed the exercise.
