Thai Teen Kills Seven In School Shooting Near Bangkok

A 14-year-old boy killed seven people, including his grandparents, in a shooting spree at a school near Bangkok before dying from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, police said.

The attack happened on Friday at Debsirin Nonthaburi School, on the outskirts of Bangkok, and is reportedly Thailand’s deadliest mass shooting since 2022.

Police said the teenager first killed his grandparents at their home before travelling to the school, where he opened fire. Six people, excluding the attacker, were killed at the school, while at least 30 others were injured.

The teenager was also among those who died after sustaining a gunshot wound. Emergency responders said they found him injured and attempted to revive him before taking him to hospital.

Police said the teenager fired at least 26 rounds and was carrying another 34 rounds of ammunition. The firearm reportedly belonged to his grandfather.

Students fled the school as emergency teams arrived at the scene, while teachers comforted pupils and helped them to safety.

An 18-year-old student told Reuters that he initially mistook the sound of gunfire for firecrackers.

“I didn’t think it was a gun at first,” he said, describing several shots before the noise stopped and then resumed.

Education Minister Prasert Jantararuangtong confirmed that both teachers and students were among those affected. Police also confirmed that the suspect was a student at the school.

Emergency worker Kiatikhun Verapongpradith said responders treated several injured students before attending to the teenage suspect.

The school had about 3,100 students and 147 teachers during the 2025 academic year, according to district authorities.

Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul expressed sadness over the incident and offered condolences to those affected.

The shooting is the second reported attack at a Thai school this year. In February, a shooting in southern Thailand left a teacher dead and a student injured.

Thailand has experienced several deadly shootings in recent years. In 2022, a former police officer killed 36 people, including 22 children, in the country’s deadliest mass killing in recent history.

In 2023, another 14-year-old boy killed two people and injured five others during a shooting at a luxury shopping centre in Bangkok.

Following that attack, Thailand introduced tighter firearm regulations, including restrictions on new firearm licences and gun access for people under 20.

According to the Small Arms Survey, Thailand had an estimated 10.3 million civilian-owned firearms in 2017, one of the highest levels of civilian gun ownership in the region.
