Tinubu Pays Tribute to Late Media Icon Doyin Abiola

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has expressed heartfelt sorrow over the death of Dr. Doyinsola Hamidat Abiola, the widow of the late Chief MKO Abiola and a pioneering figure in Nigerian journalism.

In a personally signed tribute released on Wednesday, Tinubu described Dr. Abiola as a trailblazer in the media industry and a committed advocate for democracy. Her passing, he said, was received with “deep sadness.”

Dr. Abiola passed away at 9:15 p.m. on Tuesday, August 5, 2025, following an illness.

President Tinubu paid glowing tribute to her legacy, highlighting her groundbreaking achievements in journalism. She was the first woman to serve as editor of a national newspaper and later became the first female managing director of a daily newspaper in Nigeria.

“Doyin Abiola was an Amazon and an icon in Nigerian journalism,” Tinubu stated. “Her career, which began as a reporter for the defunct Daily Sketch in 1969, was marked by exceptional dedication and integrity. She shattered glass ceilings and laid the foundation for generations of women in media.”

He recalled their close relationship, rooted in his long-standing bond with her late husband, Chief MKO Abiola. Tinubu noted her active involvement in MKO’s 1993 presidential campaign and her leadership role in the Concord newspaper titles, particularly during the turbulent period following the annulled June 12 election.

“Despite the Concord Group being shut down by the military junta, she courageously joined the struggle for the validation of the election. She was a soldier of democracy in her own right,” he said.

Tinubu further praised Dr. Abiola’s efforts in women’s empowerment, her leadership in journalism, and her unwavering commitment to public service and democratic values.

“I extend my deepest condolences to the Abiola and Aboaba families, her daughter Doyinsola, and the governments and people of Lagos and Ogun States,” the President said. “May her soul rest in peace. May Nigeria continue to be blessed with women of her strength, intellect, and courage.”
