President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has reassured Nigerians of his administration’s commitment to religious freedom, national unity and security, urging citizens to embrace peace, tolerance and mutual respect during the Christmas season.
In his Christmas message released on Wednesday, the president said no Nigerian should be subjected to violence or discrimination on the basis of faith, ethnicity or belief, stressing that the freedom to worship is a fundamental right guaranteed under the Constitution.
Tinubu said his government remains determined to protect people of all religions and ensure peaceful coexistence across the country.
“No one, regardless of ethnicity or belief, should be made to suffer for professing and practising their faith,” the president said. “The love for God and love for humanity lie at the heart of all great faiths, and these shared values must continue to bind us together as one indivisible and resilient nation.”
He noted that since assuming office in 2023, his administration has consistently prioritised the security, unity and stability of Nigeria, adding that this commitment remains unwavering.
“All Nigerians have the right to live, worship and pursue their aspirations in safety and dignity,” he said.
The president disclosed that he has held engagements throughout the year with leaders of the country’s two major religions, particularly amid concerns over religious intolerance and insecurity. He said these discussions would be strengthened to enhance collaboration between government and religious institutions in preventing conflict and promoting harmony.
Reflecting on the significance of Christmas, Tinubu described the season as a time to remember the message of Jesus Christ, love, peace, grace and goodwill to humanity.
“As we celebrate the birth of Jesus, the Prince of Peace, let us reflect on his message of hope and salvation,” he said, while commending Christians in Nigeria for their contributions to national development and their commitment to caring for the vulnerable.
The president also prayed for peace across the country, especially among people of different religious beliefs, and urged Nigerians travelling during the festive period to exercise patience and observe traffic rules.
“As many Nigerians journey to reunite with family and loved ones, I wish all travellers safe journeys and safe returns,” he said.
Tinubu expressed confidence that, with faith in God and collective effort, Nigeria would overcome its challenges and build a nation future generations would be proud of, wishing Nigerians a Merry Christmas and a prosperous New Year ahead.
