President Bola Tinubu has approved the reappointment of Brigadier-General Mohammed Buba Marwa (rtd) as Chairman of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), extending his tenure for an additional five years.
Marwa, who first took office in January 2021 under former President Muhammadu Buhari, will now lead the agency until 2031. The announcement was made on Friday through a statement issued by Presidential spokesperson Bayo Onanuga.
Under Marwa’s leadership, the NDLEA has recorded significant achievements, including the arrest of more than 73,000 drug traffickers and barons, as well as the seizure of over 15 million kilogrammes of illicit substances. The agency has also intensified its nationwide campaign against drug abuse.
President Tinubu commended Marwa for what he described as an “outstanding performance,” saying the renewal of his appointment reflects confidence in his efforts to combat drug trafficking and curb rising drug abuse.
“Your reappointment is a vote of confidence in your efforts to rid our country of the menace of drug trafficking and drug abuse. I urge you not to relent in tracking the merchants of hard drugs, out to destroy our people, especially the young ones,” Tinubu said.
Marwa, a former military governor of Lagos and Borno States, is an accomplished military officer and public administrator. A graduate of the Nigerian Military School and the Nigerian Defence Academy, he has held several key positions, including brigade major of the 23 Armoured Brigade, Aide-de-Camp to then-Chief of Army Staff Lt. Gen. Theophilus Danjuma, and Defence Adviser at Nigeria’s Permanent Mission to the United Nations.
He also holds two master’s degrees, one in Public and International Affairs from the University of Pittsburgh and another in Public Administration from Harvard University.
