Tinubu Vows To Defeat Terrorism After Boko Haram Attack Kills General, Soldiers In Borno

President Bola Tinubu has reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to ending terrorism following a deadly attack by Boko Haram insurgents in Borno State that claimed the lives of a senior military officer and several soldiers.

The attack, which occurred in Benisheikh under Kaga Local Government Area, led to the death of Brigadier General Oseni Braimah and other personnel of the 29 Task Force Brigade, part of Operation Hadin Kai.

In a statement issued by his aide, Bayo Onanuga, the president expressed deep sorrow over the incident, describing the fallen troops as brave heroes who made the ultimate sacrifice in defence of the nation.

Tinubu, however, insisted that the assault reflects growing desperation among insurgents, noting that ongoing military operations have significantly weakened their capabilities.

“Our armed forces have been conducting sustained offensives, neutralising many insurgents. This counterattack is a sign of desperation,” he said.

He urged troops on the frontline to remain resolute despite the challenges, assuring them of continued government support in terms of equipment, welfare, and operational backing.

The President also called on Nigerians and the media to support the military and avoid narratives that glorify attacks on security forces, stressing that the soldiers’ sacrifices must be honoured.

Meanwhile, the Defence Headquarters confirmed the incident, stating that troops responded swiftly to the attack and repelled the insurgents after a fierce exchange. It noted that although casualties were recorded, the attackers were forced to retreat.

The military further appealed to the public to allow due process in announcing casualties, particularly the need to notify families of fallen soldiers before releasing details.

Authorities also warned against the spread of misinformation, saying unverified reports could undermine ongoing operations and national security efforts.

In response to the worsening security situation, stakeholders including lawmakers and regional groups have called for improved military equipment, stronger strategies, and greater accountability in the fight against insurgency.

The development underscores persistent security challenges in Nigeria’s North-East, where attacks by insurgent groups continue despite intensified military operations.
