US President Donald Trump has claimed that the United States carried out a “large-scale strike” on Venezuela in the early hours of Saturday, resulting in the capture of President Nicolás Maduro and his wife.
In a post on his Truth Social platform, Trump said US forces had successfully conducted an operation against Venezuela and its leader, stating that Maduro and his wife were captured and flown out of the country. He added that the operation was carried out in coordination with US law enforcement agencies and promised that further details would be released.
The claims followed reports of explosions and low-flying aircraft over Caracas, Venezuela’s capital, in the early hours of Saturday. Witnesses and international media reported blasts near key military installations, as well as significant aerial activity over parts of the city.
Venezuelan authorities have condemned the incident, describing it as an act of military aggression by the United States. Reports indicated that explosions were also heard in neighbouring states including Miranda, La Guaira and Aragua, prompting officials to urge citizens to mobilise in response to what they described as a foreign attack.
In reaction to the developments, the Venezuelan government declared a state of emergency and called for national resistance, accusing the United States of “imperialist aggression” and reaffirming its right to defend the country’s sovereignty.
However, despite Trump’s assertions and reports of unrest in Venezuela, there has been no official confirmation from the US government. The Pentagon and other defence authorities have not publicly verified that such an operation took place. International news agencies say they are continuing to monitor the situation as events unfold.
