Trump Shares AI Image Depicting Himself As Christ Amid Rift With Pope Leo XIV

U.S. President Donald Trump has sparked fresh controversy after sharing an AI-generated image portraying himself as Jesus Christ, further escalating tensions with Pope Leo XIV amid ongoing disagreements over global issues.

The image, posted on Trump’s Truth Social platform, depicted him in flowing robes surrounded by radiant light, blending religious symbolism with imagery of American power, including fighter jets and the Statue of Liberty.

The post followed a series of sharp criticisms by Trump directed at the pope, particularly over his positions on global conflicts, migration, and governance.

In a statement, Trump accused the pontiff of being “weak on crime” and criticised his stance on foreign policy, including opposition to military actions and nuclear proliferation concerns. He also expressed disapproval of the pope’s comments on U.S. policies, insisting his administration was acting in line with its mandate.

“I don’t think he’s doing a very good job… he’s a very liberal person,” Trump told reporters.

The remarks came after Pope Leo XIV, speaking during prayers at St Peter’s Basilica in Vatican City, called for peace and restraint amid rising global tensions.

“Enough of the idolatry of self and money… True strength is shown in serving life,” the pope said, urging dialogue and coexistence over conflict.

The disagreement between both figures has been driven largely by contrasting views on international conflicts involving the United States, Israel, and Iran, as well as migration policies. The pope has repeatedly criticised violence and mass deportations, describing them as contrary to human dignity.

Relations between Trump and Pope Leo XIV have deteriorated since the pontiff’s election in 2025. Although Trump initially welcomed the emergence of the first American pope, tensions have since grown due to policy differences and increasingly pointed public exchanges.
