UEFA President Ceferin Misses World Cup Final Amid Dispute With FIFA

UEFA President Aleksander Ceferin was absent from Sunday’s FIFA World Cup final amid growing tensions between European football’s governing body and FIFA over disciplinary decisions, refereeing matters and tournament operations.

According to Reuters, citing a source familiar with the situation, one of the major sticking points was FIFA’s decision to suspend the automatic one-match ban imposed on United States forward Folarin Balogun after his red card. UEFA reportedly viewed the move as a departure from established disciplinary procedures and criticised FIFA’s handling of the matter.

Ceferin’s absence was also linked to the case of Somali referee Omar Abdulkadir Artan, who was unable to officiate at the World Cup after being denied entry into the United States. Artan has since been appointed to referee the UEFA Super Cup clash between Paris Saint-Germain and Aston Villa in August.

The report added that European football officials were dissatisfied with FIFA’s handling of matches involving Iran, as well as several operational changes introduced during the tournament, including mandatory hydration breaks and an extended half-time interval in the World Cup final.

The developments reflect the latest strain in relations between UEFA and FIFA over the administration of the global tournament.
