UK Names Peter Vowles As New High Commissioner To Nigeria

The United Kingdom has appointed veteran diplomat Peter Vowles as its next High Commissioner to Nigeria, with his posting set to begin in September 2026.

Vowles will take over from Dr Richard Montgomery, who is expected to conclude his tenure later that month after serving as Britain’s top envoy in Abuja.

Announcing the appointment, the UK Government said Vowles brings decades of diplomatic and development experience gained across Africa and Asia, as well as senior leadership roles within the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO).

Before his latest appointment, Vowles served as the United Kingdom’s Ambassador to Zimbabwe between 2023 and 2026. He previously held the position of Ambassador to Myanmar from 2021 to 2022 and occupied several senior policy and management roles within the UK government, including Transformation Director and Director for Asia, the Caribbean and Overseas Territories.

His career in international development has also seen him work in Bangladesh, India, Kenya and the Democratic Republic of Congo, focusing on governance, development and economic growth initiatives.

Vowles began his professional career in Zimbabwe, where he worked in the education and development sectors before joining the UK’s diplomatic service.

Speaking on his appointment, the incoming High Commissioner described Nigeria as a key partner to the United Kingdom and expressed his commitment to strengthening relations between both countries.

“I am honoured to be appointed as British High Commissioner to Nigeria. Nigeria is a country of immense importance to the United Kingdom, and I look forward to working closely with Nigerian partners to strengthen our relationship across trade, development and security,” he said.

His appointment comes as Nigeria and the United Kingdom continue to deepen cooperation in areas including commerce, security, education, migration and economic development.
