US Embassy Abuja Cancels March 4 Visa Appointments, Over Possible Protest due to Iran war

The United States Embassy in Abuja has cancelled all visa appointments scheduled for Wednesday, March 4, 2026, citing security concerns over possible protests in the Federal Capital Territory linked to the ongoing Iran conflict.

In a security alert shared by the U.S. Mission Nigeria, the embassy warned that demonstrations could take place in Abuja and advised American citizens in the city to remain indoors as a precaution.

The advisory, which applies specifically to Abuja on March 4, noted that previous protests by certain groups had escalated into violent clashes with Nigerian security forces.

The U.S. Embassy in Abuja informs U.S. citizens that there is a high potential for protests in Abuja today, March 4, 2026, due to the current conflict with Iran. Previous protests by some groups have resulted in violent clashes between the group and Nigerian security forces.

The mission also confirmed the temporary suspension of visa services in Abuja for the day, stating that affected applicants would receive information on how to reschedule their appointments. It urged the public to monitor its official website and social media platforms for further updates.

While visa operations in Abuja were halted, the embassy clarified that its Consular Sections in Abuja and the Consulate General in Lagos remain open for other services.

As part of its safety advisory, the embassy encouraged U.S. citizens in Abuja to avoid protest areas and large gatherings, exercise caution in public spaces such as shopping centres and places of worship, and stay updated through local media.

Additional precautions included keeping a low profile, carrying valid identification, reviewing personal security plans, ensuring mobile phones are fully charged, and varying travel routes and schedules.

The embassy also urged Americans to enrol in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) to receive real-time security updates as the situation develops.
