US–Iran Talks Begin In Pakistan Amid Deep Distrust, Ceasefire Uncertainty

High-stakes peace talks between the United States and Iran have commenced in Pakistan, with lingering distrust, sanctions disputes, and regional tensions threatening progress on a fragile ceasefire.

Officials confirmed that delegations from both countries arrived in Islamabad for negotiations seen as a critical test of ongoing diplomatic efforts. US Vice President JD Vance was received by Pakistan’s foreign minister shortly after the Iranian team touched down, underscoring the urgency surrounding the talks.

Leading Iran’s delegation, Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, struck a cautious tone, stating that while Tehran approached the discussions with “good intentions,” it does not trust Washington.

Vance had earlier warned that the United States would not engage constructively if Iran attempted to manipulate the process, signalling a tense negotiating atmosphere from the outset.

The talks follow a two-week ceasefire between both countries, brokered through quiet diplomatic efforts by Pakistan, which acted as an intermediary in relaying messages between Washington and Tehran.

Sources familiar with the negotiations described the mood as serious but cautiously hopeful, with both sides aiming to secure a halt to hostilities.

However, key issues remain unresolved. Disagreements over sanctions, broader regional security concerns, and uncertainty about whether developments in Lebanon will be included in the ceasefire framework continue to complicate discussions.

At the same time, parallel diplomatic engagements are underway, with Lebanese and Israeli representatives expected to meet separately, adding another layer of complexity to the already delicate process.

Pakistan’s mediating role reflects its strategic ties with both countries, balancing its relationship with Iran and its longstanding engagement with the United States.

With tensions still high and multiple flashpoints in play, the outcome of the Islamabad talks is expected to have far-reaching implications for regional stability and global security.
