Venezuela Supreme Court Names Delcy Rodríguez Acting President After Maduro’s Arrest

Venezuela’s Supreme Court has appointed Vice President Delcy Rodríguez as acting president following the detention of President Nicolás Maduro in an early morning operation reportedly carried out by United States forces.

In a ruling issued on Saturday, the Constitutional Chamber of the Supreme Court said Rodríguez would temporarily assume presidential responsibilities to ensure continuity of government and safeguard national interests during Maduro’s absence. The court said the decision was taken to “guarantee administrative continuity and the comprehensive defence of the Nation.”

Maduro’s reported detention in the early hours of Saturday has heightened political tensions across the country and attracted widespread international attention.

The court also announced plans to convene further sessions to examine the legal implications of the president’s absence and determine the appropriate constitutional framework for maintaining state operations. It said the process would focus on preserving governance, the administration of public affairs and Venezuela’s sovereignty amid what it described as the “forced absence” of the elected president.

Rodríguez, a close ally of Maduro and former foreign minister, is expected to oversee day-to-day government affairs while authorities assess the legal and political consequences of the unfolding situation.
