Zootopia 2 Sets New Record as Disney’s Highest Grossing Animated Film

Zootopia 2” has shattered box office records to become Walt Disney Animation Studios’ highest-grossing animated film ever, surpassing the long-standing record held by 2019’s Frozen 2, Disney confirmed on Wednesday.

The animated sequel has amassed an estimated $1.46 billion in global box office revenue, making it the fifth Disney Animation release to cross the $1 billion milestone worldwide. The achievement is particularly notable at a time when global cinema revenues are yet to fully recover to pre-pandemic levels.

A key factor behind the film’s remarkable performance has been its overwhelming success in China, where it has earned more than $560 million. During its opening weekend, Zootopia 2 reportedly accounted for about 95 per cent of all movie ticket sales in the country, marking one of Hollywood’s strongest showings in the Chinese market in recent years.

The sequel also delivered a powerful start to Hollywood’s lucrative holiday season, pulling in approximately $556 million globally over its opening weekend, which coincided with the US Thanksgiving period.

Zootopia 2 sees the return of fan-favourite characters, rabbit police officer Judy Hopps and her fox partner Nick Wilde, as they embark on a new adventure in the vibrant animal metropolis, drawing strong audience turnout across multiple international markets.

With box office revenues still lagging behind 2019 highs, the film’s blockbuster performance has provided a major boost for Walt Disney Animation Studios and cinema operators, offering renewed optimism during the second-busiest moviegoing season of the year.
