She landed her first acting role in the Mzansi Magic telenovela-turned-soap-opera isiBaya, in 2013. Mbatha was born in KwaMashu, north of Durban. She is known among her friends for being full of life, with tons of personality, a big heart and the gift of the gab.

Her younger sister committed suicide in 2014 and Nomzamo has been quite vocal on social media about how unbearable the pain has been.
